HPC Specialist

Overview:  This position is responsible for the analysis and evaluation of user business problems and the development of system recommendations to meet requirements. Analyzes current and technical processes to formulate and develop new and modified business information processing systems. Duties include coordinating with business and technology teams to ascertain system requirements, such as program functions, output requirements, input data acquisition, execution of user acceptance, and may coordinate testing and system controls.

Influences development of solutions that impact strategic project/program goals and business results. Recommends and develops new technical solutions, products, and/or standards in support of function’s strategy and operations. Leads and manages works of other technical staff that has significant impact on project results/outputs.

Resolves highly complex problems using significant application of technical knowledge, conceptualizing, reasoning and interpretation. Develops solutions that are highly innovative, and achieved through research and integration of best practices.

Requires ability to communicate with executive leadership (internally or client) regarding matters of significant importance to the organization/project. Works to convince others to accept area’s view/current practices and agree/accept new concepts, practices and approaches.

Has in-depth understanding of technical principles, theories, concepts and their application across range of programs. Serves as a subject matter expert within technical domain area.

Provides both government and contractor (end-user) support in HPCMP related areas. Gives input on HPC courses of action along with providing accurate, in depth, reporting to government lead. Provides SME end-user support on best practices/uses of HPC resources in addition to contributing/participating in groups providing input helping to determine the future path of the HPCMP.

Responsibilities (Required)
  • Perform daily (as needed), weekly and monthly accounting for DTRA HPC team. This accounting covers users daily consumption, usage by COR, by contract, organizations, department and divisions usage.
  • Responsible for assisting data transport across classifications, various DSRC’s and users/company’s locations. This involves proper documentation of the physical hardware used for transfer, following of classification guidelines, required documentation completion of transfer, liaison between the receiving/transporting center, staging data for transport and initial management of data on new HPC systems.
  • Daily review and monitoring of users submitted work; used to notify customers of potential issues now and in the future.
  • Maintain and support software installations for the DTRA HPC user base. This includes license management, installation, access rights, versioning and other support-based items to ensure proper management of software.
  • Collaborate with the DTRA HPC user community, government representative and DTRA’s HPC team to accurately input requirements as gathered by the DTRA HPC team.
  •  Wholly support the S//RD environment currently housed at the ARL computing center. This includes monitoring of the system partition, job monitoring, working as a liaison for the customer regarding software/hardware needs, evaluating system issues and assisting with management of user’s data.
  • Lead for setting up user and group workspaces, size management for established spaces, control of security groups, management of directory/file level access rights, liaison between approving authority and end users, etc… This requires working with software companies to create varying levels of access based on user/company licensed software version.
  • Establish training environments for DTRA/vendor hosted training. This includes setting up and management of work environments for the larger group in addition to single or shared workspaces. Additionally, separate queues are created with the help of the DSRC’s to achieve quicker results.
  •  Have trained two new hires to the DTRA HPC team over the course of three years. During that time also took on the onboarding specialist position while new employees were brought up to speed and in entirety while the position was being filled.
  • Participate in various HPC related seminars/meetings. These include semi-annual HPCMP user advocacy group (UAG), annual S/AAA conference, annual HPCMP user group meeting and the annual Supercomputing Conference. Additionally, attendance of any HPC related end-user meetings or quorums.
  • Other HPC duties as requested
Experience with and/or a working knowledge of the following:
  • Linux/Unix Operating System
  • Knowledge of access rights and Unix groups
  • Software Management Skills
  • Experience in Python
  • Experience in writing Linux scripts
  • Ability to operate in batch systems PBS/SLURM
  • Ability to filter data for accurate reporting from macro to micro

Required Experience/Qualifications
  • BS degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience or a Master's degree with no prior relevant experience. May possess a Doctorate in technical domain.

Support DTRA HPC Initiatives as Directed by Government Leadership and Lead Ctr HPC SME
  • Technology Assessment of HPC architectures of interest to DTRA
  • End user customer support to resolve issues with service providers and technology transition
  • Technical advisor on HPC aspects of DTRA SOWs, SBIR and STTR topics and technical review thereof
  • Benchmarking, performance modeling and usability analysis of new HPCMP system acquisitions
  • Technical representation for DTRA on HPCMP Baseline Configuration Team to improve Cross Center Commonality enabling learn once, run anywhere
  • Participate in User Advocacy Group as alternate, to advise HPCMP on end user issues
  • Assistance to DTRA’s performers in preparing HPCMP Frontier, Capability Application
  • Project (CAP), Programming Environment and Training (PET) pre-planned project proposals, such other calls as which may arise, and technical assistance to DTRA in proposal prioritization
  • Identify gaps and provide technical content to government customer for Small Business
  • Innovative Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) topics and calls for Unfunded Requirements. Review technical content of responses to proposals and provide written evaluations to the government customer.
  • Participate in external activities with other Federal academic and commercial HPC organizations to identify trends and techniques that will impact or be applicable to DTRA’s current and projected HPC workload

Preferred Experience/Qualifications
  • Experience in the DoD Environment and various classification levels
  • 5 years Linux/Unix experience
  • Ability to work independently while prioritizing and resolving multiple tasks at a time
  • Basic knowledge of computing systems access control
  • Understand the process by which mathematical calculations are performed in a Linux environment.
  • Critical/logical thinking skills
  • Advanced communications and presentations skills (verbal and written) enabling precise conveyance of information across all CC/S/A/FA with command and proper enunciation of the English language
  • DoD risk management concepts in a mission assurance environment

Special Requirements/Security Clearance
  • DOD TS/SCI eligibility is required
